ZOE WODARZ
Texture and technique is taking over the studio this week. I’m blending gel prints, ink, and digital magic. It’s all part of creating fresh prints for my upcoming summer collections.
The Process & Tools Behind the Texture
Want to know how these prints came to life? It all started on the gel plate.
For this experiment, I chose Japanese rice paper for its beautiful, delicate absorbency. When it came to the medium, I found that black screenprinting ink works best. It should have the consistency of honey, be water-soluble for easy removal (like acrylics), and not be India ink-based. It dries with a rich, matte finish that is absolutely perfect for scanning into digital files later.
My tool kit for this session was delightfully low-tech:
Working this way is incredibly tactile. Every wipe of the paper towel and scrape of the knife creates a completely spontaneous mark that you just can’t replicate digitally.
Moving ink across the page feels so free and spontaneous. I love the pop of these layered, textured colors. This style is brand new for me. I can’t wait to see it on apparel, textiles, and home decor.
